Orthodontics refers to the area of dentistry responsible for straightening teeth using a variety of different braces.
Braces of the past
For years, the only braces available were metal brackets that were bonded to each tooth, and joined together using a sharp and uncomfortable metal wire. These traditional braces were often very painful for weeks at a time, difficult to clean around, would limit which foods and drinks could be consumed, and often de-bond, thus increasing the number of visits needed to the dentist.
New 'invisible' invisalign braces
However, over the last 10 years, a number of alternative ‘invisible’ braces have been researched and developed, enabling dentists to provide orthodontic treatments without all the problems associated with traditional braces.
The leading retailer of such treatments is invisalign, and at Holly Dental Practice in Preston we already have extensive experience with this system, having successfully treated patients for over 8 years. Most cases are fixed within 6 to 12 months, with some simpler cases taking even less still.
Can it work for you?
Overcrowded teeth occur when there is a lack of room within your jaw for all of your teeth to fit normally.
Widely spaced teeth occur when you have extra space within your jaw.
Cross bites occur when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned. It usually causes one or more upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth, and can happen on both the front and/or the sides of the mouth.
Deep bites occur when the upper teeth overlap significantly with the lower teeth.
Under bites occur when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth, usually caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both.
